Synopsis:

The camera pans across the deserted city at night. In the reflections of alleyways and places of transit, the borders between interior and exterior begin to dissolve. The sleepwalker’s night is punctuated by moments of ambivalence; in medical terms, he is awake but has no control over what he does. Racked by physical exhaustion, his unsettling memories of previous nights remain fragmented and bear witness to insecurity and disorientation. Vanessa Nica Mueller’s films deal with the multiple levels of subjective memory at the borderlines and transitions between documentary and art film. Half the Night was filmed at various locations including Berlin’s decommissioned Tempelhof Airport and the City Nord area of Hamburg, built in the 1960s as a peripheral office district. Today, these areas are being abandoned and, in the film, become reflections of an inner map.
